Boston 4 – 3 Detroit (OT)
On Tuesday, January 24th, the Boston Bruins hosted the Detroit Red Wings. The last time these two teams faced off was just last Wednesday, when the Bruins lost a commanding 4-1 lead and went on to lose in a 6-5 shootout. Coming into the game, the Bruins were fiourth in the Atlantic Division and Detroit sat sixth. The Red Wings were fouyr points down, but had three games in-hand on the Bs.
After leaving the Pittsburgh game early on Sunday with a migraine, Tuukka Rask made his return and made 23 saves. The Bruins grabbed an early lead off of Kevan Miller’s first goal of the season. It wasn’t until 10:59 of the first period that Detroit even recorded a shot on goal. However, this shot did tie up the game. But a Brad Marchand score took the Bruins into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.
Bruins Down in the Second
A sloppy second period (for the most part) by the Bruins put them behind 3-2. Red Wing defenseman Mike Green found the back of the net off Kevan Miller’s skate after a shot from the point. Tatar later gave the Red Wings the lead with a 2-on-1 shot to the low glove side of Rask. Overall, the Bs continued to struggle to find the back net and finish their offensive opportunities. Mutliple times, including the two Detroit goals, the Bs simply gave Detroit too much space with the puck and allowed them to get into scoring positions.
As mentioned, the last meeting between these two original six teams ended in a shootout loss for the Bruins. This time that was not the case. David Pastrnak finally found the back of the net with less than a minute to go in OT! Just when the Bruins needed him most, he ended an 17-game goal drought. His last goal came on December 14th against the Penguins. This win also ended the Bruins’ four-game losing streak. They now improve to 24-21-6 and are yet again in a playoff position, fighting for their lives.
