The Celtics have a great collection of guards and forwards, and in the offseason they added an All-Star caliber big man in Al Horford. If the Celtics could add another top tier big man to play alongside Al Horford, then that blank banner in Waltham could be changing to banner #18 next summer. Isaiah Thomas thinks he knows just the guy, Demarcus Cousins. Mitch Lawrence of sportingnews.com sat down with Thomas to discuss Cousins and here is what he had to say:
If he came to Boston, that would be good, really good,The thing is, I’ve got his respect. I’ve always had that.
When I was with him, I didn’t back down, Thomas told Sporting News. I’m a point guard and that was my job. No matter if we did or didn’t get along off the court, on that court we were going to get along, and I was going to hold him accountable. That’s just how it is. It’s how I’ve always been. And he respects me for doing that.
Would Kings Trade Cousins Now?
There are many challenges to completing a trade with the Kings for Cousins. First big challenge is the Kings have a brand new arena, and the last thing they want to tell the fans is that they are trading their best player and packing it in for the year, as part of a rebuild.
The Kings have struggled to put together a decent season for a long time. The last time they broke the 40 win mark was in the 2005-2006 season. The Kings are kind of a disaster, but they need to fill the seats, and trading Cousins won’t help their cause. If the Kings have a rough start with Cousins, then trade deadline talks should heat up.
Another challenge is figuring out what the Kings would deem as an acceptable for a return on Cousins. If we are talking draft picks and salary fillers, then you can sign me up. If we start talking Smart and Jaylen Brown, then I start feeling uncomfortable. I am terrible at giving teams’ fair value because I tend to overvalue certain Celtics players. Apparently, Ainge is too, as he has had a lot of opportunities to make a trade, but failed to pull the big triggers.
Cousins chances of being traded to Boston in the next couple weeks are extremely small. Depending on how the Kings play this year those chances could change quickly. The Celtics are setup perfectly to trade for a star like Cousins. Gotta love Isaiah planting the seeds here.
